Check-Out Procedures: Undergraduate Housing

WHILE MOVING OUT:

Your room should be returned to the condition you found it at Move In.  Please read the “Moving Out Check List” and “Cleaning Checklist” to understand your responsibility for cleaning you room and/or unit, removing personal items and trash, and making sure that all University-owned furniture in your room at Move In is in place. 

MOVE OUT CHECK LIST:

  • Remove all personal belongings.  Double check drawers, closets, walls and corners carefully.  Do not leave personal items in the hallway.  If any personal items are found during the post inspection, you will be charged for the cost of the removal and disposal of the items.  Please note: The Housing Office and the Institute are not responsible for loss or damage to personal property left in vacated rooms.
  • Remove trash and recyclables and place them in their designated locations.  Do not leave them in the hallway or in your room.  If trash is found in the room and/or unit you will be charged for the removal and disposal of the items.
  • Clean your room.  If applicable, clean common areas.  You and your roommates are responsible for cleaning the common areas in an apartment or house.
  • Make sure all University furniture found at Move In is in your room and in its original configuration.  You will be charged the replacement cost of any missing item(s) or the reconfiguration labor time of any item(s).
  • Please make sure to lock the door to your unit once you vacate.  If applicable, lock the door to your private bedroom.

CLEANING CHECKLIST
The following items will be checked at the time of the inspection. Please be sure that you have checked each item carefully.

  • Floors
  • Carpets
  • Ceilings, walls, corners, baseboards
  • Windows, sills and blinds
  • Light fixtures; replace bulbs if needed
  • Ceiling fan blades and lights
  • Casings around all doors
  • Light switch and electrical outlet covers
  • Clean inside all cabinets and drawers, wipe down exteriors
  • Clean countertops and sinks
  • Clean refrigerator(s), clean inside and out, including doors and shelves, and clean rubber gaskets around both doors (remove crumbs)
  • Clean dishwasher; including inside trays and racks and outside of door, especially edges
  • Clean stovetop, under burners and burner drip pans, oven (including racks), and broiler pan and drawer *IF YOU HAVE A SELF-CLEANING OVEN, DO NOT USE OVEN CLEANER *
  • Clean range hood; Clean and check lights - replace bulb if needed
  • Clean bathtubs/showers, toilets, doors and walls
  • Wipe down towel racks, soap dishes and toilet paper holders
  • Clean exhaust fans in bathrooms

After moving out and returning your keys, your room will be checked by Housing inspectors for cleanliness and condition.  Please note: This inspection is completed by the Housing inspector only.  Once the inspection is complete, our Housing office will notify you by email if any charges apply.

Check-Out Procedures: Graduate/Postdoc Housing

Prior to moving out:

Schedule a pre-move out inspection appointment. Call Housing Maintenance at 626-395-6175 for your inspection at least two weeks in advance before your scheduled move out date to avoid scheduling conflicts. Inspections will be scheduled between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, with the exception of Institute Holidays.  Please note: You will need to be present during the inspection.  

While Moving Out:

Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ's

Pre-Move Out Inspection

Q:  What is a Pre-Move Out inspection?

A: A pre-move out inspection is an inspection/walk through scheduled prior to tenants moving out.  During the pre-move out inspection the tenants are informed of what areas need to be addressed, such as repairs and cleaning to return the unit to move-in condition and to avoid damage charges.

Q:  When can I schedule my pre-move out inspection?

A:  Inspections are generally scheduled within 14 days of your scheduled move out date

Q:  Do I need to be fully packed up and have my apartment cleaned for this inspection?

A:  No.  A pre-move out inspection is just an inspection to provide guidance to tenants that have any questions in regards to what needs to be addressed or done before they move-out and to avoid any possible charges.  The tenants are informed of what areas need to be addressed to return the unit to move-in condition.  This may consists of any cleaning and/or repairs.

Q: How long are the pre-move out inspections?

A: Pre-move out inspections typically range from 15-30 minutes.

Q:  Is the pre-move out inspection required?

A:  No.  The pre-move out inspections are scheduled to help benefit the tenant(s) to avoid possible charges once they vacate their room and/or unit.
